Supermarket own brand beers: Pirkka vs. Rainbow

Have you noticed the supermarkets stock their own brand beers now? Wow. Naturally we had to put them to the test. That’s why we put two classic brands head to head: Rainbow (S-ryhmä) vs. Pirkka (Kesko).

The Pirkka beer is very beerlike designwise. It’s the oval. Nothing says beer like an oval. And if you add some barley behind the oval – even more beer-y. This can says “beer” all over.

Of course the Pirkka beer also looks kind of cheap, but that is most certainly intentional. After all, you are buying a supermarket brand beer.

The colour of this beer is pale yellow. No, actually more like golden. Man, this is a fine brew. Why not pour two glasses while we’re at it?

This is a really solid beer with a high class scent. Love the smell and mellowness. Mild, and definetely drinkable. Mmm-mmm. Feels good. To be recommended.

Well that was a pleasent surprise. So how a bout the Rainbow beer?

Again, you can’t go wrong with the oval when talking beer. Rainbow is also going with the barley in the backround, but is also adding some pictures of hops and a pint glass. That should make it clear what we’re dealing with here.

Again, we’re going with two glasses, so there’s more to drink. But.. what’s up with this smell? That’s not the smell of beer. It’s more like artificial sweetener. And kind of skunky, with undertones of a slight barn yard funk?

We shall anyhow have a sip and… Lord almighty! What is this crap? Has this beer actually gone off?

Oh no – we’ve been tricked into buying non-alcoholic beer!

What a major disappointment – this beer is such a loser.

So there we have it folks, Pirkka beer won by about a million points. Avoid the other one. (which we don’t even want to mention anymore).
